Admission Procedure:
(GAIS) The Gateway American International School program comprises Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Grades 1 through 12. It aims to provide a strong academic foundation to ensure educational continuity and success for those students returning to their home countries or
moving on to other international schools, as well as those who will complete their schooling at
GAIS.
One of our highest goals is helping students learn how to learn. Students who understand the process of learning, and themselves as learners, will be able to successfully make the many transitions that will face them in the 21st century, in their schooling, in their professional careers, and in their personal lives. To this end we believe students should be personally engaged in their learning, and that their learning experiences should be wide, varied, and rich. We aim to provide stimulating learning activities that capture children’s interest, and at the same time allow them to master the skills and concepts that characterize the educated
person. Our intent is to make learning appealing and interesting, but this is very different from a “fun and games” education. Underlying appealing learning activities is the expectation that students will be attentive, behave in a way that will enhance their own and others’ learning, and take responsibility, according to their age, for their actions and their learning. The curriculum includes, appropriate to each age and grade, studies in English language arts (reading, writing, speaking, listening); mathematics; social studies, including Indian studies; music; physical education; computer; library & research skills; Tamil, Hindi or French.
Learning objectives are described in greater detail in the Program Overview booklets sent home with students at the beginning of the year. In the classroom the various subjects (language arts, math, science, social studies, library, technology, and sometimes World Languages, art and music) are presented, studied, and assessed within an integrated, thematic structure as much as possible and practical. We strive to design authentic and life connected learning tasks in which students make choices, take risks, solve problems, recite skills, and develop strategies for learning and applying acquired knowledge.
